Peruvian police say Van der Sloot, long suspected in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway, has confessed to killing 21-year-old business student Stephany Flores on May 30 after they met playing poker.

But according to a Chilean police report obtained by The Associated Press through Peruvian authorities late Saturday, Van der Sloot gave a different account of events while in custody in neighboring Chile, where he was captured after the killing and quickly extradited.

In the version offered to Chilean investigators, Van der Sloot said he and Flores were surprised in the early morning by two robbers in an apparent assault.

“A man came out of the bathroom blocking the access door with a knife in his hand. On the bed was another man with a gun,” the Spanish-language report quotes him as saying. “The man with the knife said to be quiet, but Stephany began talking in a loud voice and he hit her in the face, making her nose bleed.”

It also says Van der Sloot told Chilean agents that the previous day, he and Flores had been extorted by apparent police officers who demanded $4,000 and a wristwatch he brought from Thailand.

Chilean police told their Peruvian colleagues that the 22-year-old Dutchman responded in English to their questioning but refused to sign a declaration after learning he would be expelled to Peru.

On Friday, a Peruvian judge ordered Van der Sloot jailed on first-degree murder and robbery charges.

Police in Peru say he confessed to beating Flores to death after she learned details of the Holloway case from his laptop. He allegedly broke her nose, strangled her, threw her to the floor, then emptied her wallet and drove away in her SUV, said Gen. Cesar Guardia, chief of the criminal police. He then traveled south to Chile by bus.

If convicted on the murder and robbery charges, Van der Sloot could get 15 to 35 years in prison.

Van der Sloot’s newly hired Peruvian attorney, Maximo Altez, has asked the judge to declare his client’s confession void on the grounds it was made in the presence of a defense lawyer appointed by police.

Van der Sloot remains the lone suspect in the 2005 disappearance of Alabama teen Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean resort island of Aruba.

Peru’s criminal police chief said recently that Van der Sloot told interrogators he knows where Holloway’s body is, but Aruba’s attorney general said Friday he is skeptical Van der Sloot was telling the truth.

A 14-minute film shows events leading up to the Battle of Atlanta.

The Painting
The Cyclorama of the Battle of Atlanta is the world’s largest oil painting, painted in 1885-86 by artists from Germany. It has been shown in Grant Park since 1893.

Diorama
The three-dimensional foreground, called a diorama, was added in 1936, bringing a depth of 30 feet to the display.

Civil War Museum
Artifacts from the American Civil War period are displayed on two floors and include weapons, photographs and uniforms. A touch-screen computer system tells the story of the war. Other videos recount period history and Cyclorama restoration.

Steam Locomotive Texas
The centerpiece of the museum is the steam locomotive Texas, which played a key role in the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862 (also known as Andrews� Raid). The Texas was used by the Confederates to pursue and recover the locomotive General, stolen by Union raiders led by James J. Andrews. The raiders planned to tear up tracks behind them to disrupt the vital Western and Atlantic Railroad supply line between Atlanta and Chattanooga. The General is currently on exhibit at the Kennesaw Civil War Museum in Marietta, Georgia. The Great Locomotive Chase was the subject of a Disney movie in 1956.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 10.4 percent in April, down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 10.5 percent in March. This is the 31st consecutive month Georgia has exceeded the national rate, which is now 9.9 percent. The state’s April jobless rate was up 1.2 percentage points from 9.2 percent at this same time last year. The jobless rate in metro Atlanta in April 2009 was 8.6 percent.

Also in April, 29,361 laid-off workers in metro Atlanta filed initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits, a decrease of 4,938, or 14.4 percent, from 34,299 filed in April 2009.

Statewide, 60,661 laid-off workers filed initial claims, a decline of 23,685, or 28.1 percent, from 84,346 filed in April 2009. Most of the first time claims were filed in trade, manufacturing, construction, and administrative and support services.

The state showed a modest increase in new jobs in April for the third consecutive month. The number of jobs increased 26,900, or seven-tenths of a percentage point, from 3,794,700 in March to 3,821,600. However, the number of jobs remains less than in April 2009, when there were 3,912,700 payroll jobs, 2.3 percent or 91,100 more than this year.

Metro Atlanta’s job market also showed a modest improvement for the third consecutive month. The number of payroll jobs in metro Atlanta increased 18,100, or eight-tenths of a percentage point, from 2,246,700 in March to 2,264,800.

President Barack Obama

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama moved aggressively to show his government is in charge of the Gulf oil spill on Thursday, calling the gushing leak an “unprecedented disaster” and blasting a “scandalously close relationship” between oil companies and regulators.

“The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort,” Obama told a news conference. He was responding to criticism that his administration had been slow to act and had left BP in charge of plugging the leak.

Obama said many critics failed to realize “this has been our highest priority.”

He conceded that “people are going to be frustrated until it stops.”

Obama announced a series of new steps to deal with the aftermath of the spill, including continuing a moratorium on drilling permits for six months.

He also said he was suspending planned exploration drilling off the coasts of Alaska and Virginia and on 33 wells currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico.

The president, speaking to reporters in the East Room of the White House, spoke as oil giant BP pumped mudlike heavy drilling oil into the well in hopes of stopping the flow.

He said while the “top kill” procedure was an example of his administration’s willingness to try “any reasonable strategy” to stop the gusher, the process “offers no guarantee of success.”

Obama’s insistence that his administration was in charge of dealing with the disaster were a marked change in language. Previously, administration officials had emphasized that while they were overseeing BP’s actions, the oil company had the expertise and equipment to do the job.

As recently as Monday, the top federal official in charge of responding to the oil catastrophe, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, declined to broadly say the federal government was “in charge.” Instead, when asked about that, Allen told reporters that BP was responsible for the cleanup and the government was accountable to make sure the company did it. “I would say it’s less a case of ‘in charge,’” Allen said when asked about that phrase.

Yet with each passing day, public frustration with Obama’s government has grown, and his poll numbers on the matter are dropping.

As an example of the government’s hands-on approach, Obama said that BP had wanted to drill a single “relief” well in an effort to eventually stop the leak in several months if all else failed. Instead, the administration insisted on two relief wells being drilled, Obama said.

Over and over, the president sought to counter criticism that the administration was giving too much leeway to BP PLC.

“Make no mistake, BP is operating at our direction,” he said.

“We will demand they pay every dime they owe for the damage they’ve done and the painful losses they’ve caused,” Obama said.

He denounced what he called “the oil industry’s cozy and sometimes corrupt” ties with government regulators.

He spoke shortly after the head of the troubled agency that oversees offshore drilling resigned under pressure. The departure of Minerals Management Service Director Elizabeth Birnbaum was announced just before Obama’s news conference began.

Asked about inevitable comparisons between his administration’s handling of the disaster with his predecessor’s handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Obama said: “I’ll leave it to you guys to make those comparisons. … What I’m thinking about is how do you solve the problem?”

“I’m confident people are going to look back and say this administration was on top of what was an unprecedented crisis,” he added.

Still, he acknowledged, “We’ve got to get it right.”

Sen. Frank Lautenberg , D-N.J., a critic of offshore drilling, said Obama took an important step to halt the most imminent environmental threat to the Atlantic coast, but he said the danger will remain until there is a permanent ban on drilling in the Atlantic.

“BP’s oil catastrophe in the Gulf is a wake-up call for our nation. Giving Big Oil more access to our nation’s waters will only lead to more pollution, more lost jobs and more damage to our economy,” Lautenberg said.

Obama said the federal government “has acted consistently with a sense of urgency” about the spill. But, he acknowledged a “sense of complacency on the government’s part in planning how to deal with the worst-case scenario” before it happened.

He said a cozy relationship between industry and government didn’t change when he came into office.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar “came in and started cleaning house. But the culture had not fully changed at MMS. And surely I take responsibility for that.”

But, he added, “there is no evidence some of the corrupt practices that took place earlier took place under the present administration’s watch.”

As to the resignation of the head of the agency that overseas offshore drilling, he said, “I found out about her resignation today. I don’t know the circumstances under which this occurred.”

The contribution approved Thursday is in addition to the $6 million pledged by the Athletic Association to academic programs last year, to be paid out over three years.

Under a proposal by Athletics Director Damon Evans, the latest donation allocates $500,000 for need-based scholarships, $500,000 to launch a new merit-based scholarship program and $1 million to fund four professorships.

Richard Sullivan got rocked again and the offense couldn’t catch back up from the early deficit. There appears to be a lot of new guys cropping up in the Braves system lately, the newest being tonight’s addition Mike Daniel. Hey, he made his presence felt. Donell Linares remains the most consistent hitter on this team. His overall numbers look pretty mediocre but in May he has an .813 OPS with a much better looking .354 OBP. He didn’t walk any in April but has 9 in just under 100 PAs this month.

Myrtle Beach’s couldn’t muster much offense even with an early morning start (what that has to do with offense I don’t really know), but they didn’t need much with Julio Teheran laying down the law. He didn’t strike out all the guys that he has been in his last few games but it didn’t much matter as he was just as dominant. I’d like to see him get a round through the league to see if he can sustain this pace, but he really has established himself as one of the best pitchers in the minors.

I finally got to see a Braves team in action this year and it was the fastest played game I have ever been a part of with the official time clocking in at exactly two hours (though I think it was actually about 1:50). I will post some detailed thoughts about this game tomorrow when I get back home. Chris Masters pitched solidly if not spectacularly. Myke Jones continues to best the best hitter on this club since May started (.929 OPS). I really like Myke Jones and even though he is a little old for the league I think he has the tools to succeed, he may just have to adjust to each level. Jorge Bucardo held the offense in check for most of the night and only gave up some runs when the LF just stood in place as Jake Hanson hit a triple down the line that he thought was foul. Otherwise that guy was just dominant striking out the first 4 batters of the game swinging.

Chipper Jones

One thing that I have always said is that I’ve never played this game for money. I play it because I enjoy playing it and I’ve been pretty good at it for the last little bit. The reality is that I have a lot of things pulling at me away from the game. I’ve got four little boys at home and a wife who has sacrificed a lot during my team in the big leagues. I make no bones about it. I am seriously considering it no matter how this year ends up for the Atlanta Braves. It’s something that’s still in the works, but hasn’t been ruled out for the end of the year. I’m not going to stick around and hamstring this organization if I’m not playing well and not enjoying myself… I’ve committed to play this year. I’m not going to walk out on the club. But at the end of this year, if I don’t feel like I can contribute at a high level like I always have, then it is a possibility that I will walk away… There’s no line. It’s just a feel of whether I’ll be able to continue to do this at a high level past this year.

I’m going to go ahead and state what I’ve been thinking for some time. If Chipper continues his current pace, then he should hang them up after this season. That will free up a lot of money for the Braves. My ideal scenario would be to move Martin Prado to third base, re-sign Omar Infante (or someone else) to play second base, and sign Jayson Werth to play left field (yes, I have a baseball man-crush on the bearded outfielder). But that’s way down the road. Chipper’s still got time to turn it around… and I really hope he does.
